John Thomas Lang
John Thomas Lang (1876-1975) was an estate agent and Labor politician, equally suspicious of communism and capitalism. He was Premier of New South Wales in 1925-27 and 1930-32. His unorthodox plan (1931) to combat the Depression split the Australian Labor Party. The following year Governor Game dismissed the Lang government for defying Commonwealth legislation designed to prevent it from defaulting on overseas debts. NSW Premier dismissed
To fight the economic depression, NSW Premier Jack Lang defies the federal government by refusing to pay interest on foreign loans in favour of domestic dole support, and instructing government departments not to pay debts to the federal Treasury. In an unprecedented move, Lang and his Cabinet are dismissed by the NSW Governor Sir Philip Game for defying the Commonwealth government’s financial agreements legislation.
