Julia Margaret (Bella) Guerin
Julia Margaret (Bella) Guerin (1858-1923) was, in 1883, the first woman to graduate from an Australian university (Melbourne). She became a teacher and activist. Her dual membership of non-party womenís political organisations and the Australian Labor Party proved untenable and she experienced tensions as a socialist feminist within the Labor Party. She defended civil liberties and promoted womenís participation in public life. Courtesy Australian Dictionary of Biography
