Edith Dircksey Cowan
Edith Dircksey Cowan (1861-1932) was a leader of the women’s movement in Western Australia, committed to ameliorative reforms that would enhance women’s dignity and responsibility and secure proper care for mothers and children. In 1921-24 she was a member of Western Australia’s Legislative Assembly, and was Australia’s first female parliamentarian. She had stood as a Nationalist, believing the organisation to be non-party.
